Birds are not silly, they will not usually eat plants that are poison to themselves. Evolution has given them a blue print that tells them not to eat or yes you can eat, as well as other useful information, for instance if you isolate a bird from all birds, how come it will sing its own song when its never heard a bird sing Before in its life?????????.Answer the blue print of life for that particular species, Clever don't you think, |

Burning Plastic and rubber, Toilet Cleaners, Paint Thinners, Wax, Some people who keep birds in the home spray Fly killers and insect replants Without thinking, I will admit I am one of those people who have sprayed Fly killer in my home (to kill that pest of a fly I could not swot) just before I went out to an owl event I took a Barn owl (hand tame) in doors for a second whilst I made the final preparations to leave, within minutes it was sneezing, expelling clear liquid from The nose. Loosing balance swaying to keep up right, within 4 minutes it was DEAD, I knew what I had done, Now Nothing is sprayed within the reach of the birds I have. METALS Beware if you have an old cage and want to paint it. (some paints can kill) BRASS Is made up of Zink and Copper, these metals are toxic to birds. Chrome contains Zink. Sliding bolts and Padlocks are not a threat to small birds or smaller parakeets these are not in the habit of chewing them, larger Parrots African Greys, Amazons, McCaw's, Are chewers and like to play this is were the danger lays. Reported in the Avian Medicine & Surgery Journal a macaw chewed a few brass padlocks and Died of zinc poisoning, it also chewed the chrome cage it was in, Copper............ Is a potentially toxic metal to birds, but less common in the bird world, let the water run for a few seconds before you give the water from your tap to your birds, if they are copper, the water lays in the pipe for a while and copper acidic taste is given off Causing sickness in the bird. LEAD...... EXTREMELY TOXIC , People still have lead based paint, and paint old rusty cages they also paint over the rust with antirust paint (zinc) This will kill your bird so be warned it will feel groggy fall from the perch a few times loose its appetite and will end up dead. Don't let your bird play with anything that contains lead, TIN, STEEL, IRON (raw state) are not poison to birds only if they are Galvanize, AFRICAN GREYS FALLING FROM PERCHES. All African Greys will fall from its perch more than once during its life, I call these birds a hold on bird for they like to hook the beak on the wire to sleep rather than stand they go into a deep sleep and over balance causing them to lean forwards and lose balance this is common for these birds, BUT the moment it starts to fall to one side once on the floor of the cage or topple forwards, ACT STRAIT away call a vet to take it there as soon as possible, take into consideration zinc OR lead poisoning Some occasions they will die in a matter of hours, Or it could be that they are lacking in dietary calcium resulting in Hypocalcaemia. I have had 3 African Greys come to me like this and they were given an anti inflammatory and a strong all round antibiotic mixed to together and give orally. Ask the Vet for dosage. The legs on the greys started to go ridged very fast as if all Joints were going solid, one of the Greys named Mike (female) was one that always bit, I started to make clicking sounds with my tongue , 1, 2, 3, clicks for each thing I did, I started rotating the legs and exercising them every half hour, her weight fell off I could feel the fat going fast, I kept pumping baby food into her by tube. every hour, for 36 hours, she started to click back, to me she was telling me. More of this more of that, she is the only one that survived, even today I greet her with 2 clicks and she greets me with the same Like I did when she was ill. It ment HELLO.
