In growing feathers, O.K. NOW
above The eye of this snowy owl, can be done by yourself, if not sure see vet, or some one who knows how to do it. This is how I do it, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT if you do not know how, Disinfect pin, or needle, take head off of the lump, then slowly extract the feather that is growing backwards take out all liquid that is inside the lump it will scab over quickly and heal quickly, keep an eye on it when the feather re grows. Seek vet if it happens again. |

Gangrene. Is the death of living tissue, this is what happened to this wild Kestrel. The lower part of the leg was amputated, some people say that the bird should be put to sleep, It has now healed, it can fly, adapted to feeding, capable of breeding, why kill it. We don't mind looking after it after all we are a rescue centre, for injured Raptors. O.K. NOW

Blindness, Nothing you can do, except train it to the whistle or voice this is what we are doing with this bird, notice the upright position we have called it for food, it is now waiting for the next command come and get it lots of short sharp whistles to guide him to the food, He has learnt were the perches are and knows his way around the aviary, we have the time, you will not. The best thing in this case put to sleep, I want to know how much they will learn. |

Eyes are mainly damaged in the breeding season male gets carried away during copulation And courtship. · Fighting * infection* Treatment always see the vet, · Remember even the slightest scratch can infect the eye and could make the bird blind |

Always carry wound powder obtained from a good pet shop or vets practice, if your bird does get a small scratch and does not require stitches the wound powder is a good antiseptic and helps stop infections, cover wound with powder until all wound is completely covered, but keep an eye on it. |

FEATHERS |
You will certainly have broken feathers if you keep your bird in an aviary made of wire (wrong) *if you tether your unsteady bird, or a frightened bird, it will try to scoot along the floor using its wings taking the feathers & skin from the shoulders down to the bone, if you allow this and do nothing, get rid of your birds you don't deserve them, if this happens it will take a long time to treat, · Broken flight feathers, during non moulting season, these can be repaired by impinge the feathers. · SEE SECTION FEATHERS, it will show you stage by stage how to mend them. Practice on dropped feathers, |

LUMPS |

To day at 1.48 pm I was asked if I could collect this bird from Deal Kent, (young Black Bird) I explained That I was a rescue centre for owls and other birds of prey, I went when she said that it was dying,. When we got it home it had died, Each of these lumps were full of thick white puss. This is, in growing feathers, (Feathers growing Backwards into the bird instead of out) With this amount the bird was so stressed it must have been in a lot of pain

MENDING BROKEN FEATHERS (IMPING) |

Broken Feathers no problem, imagine this Feather is still attached to the bird look at the red line this is were the feather is inside the birds wing the blood line. The feather is no good to the bird what so ever, so we want to make it as new as possible, this procedure is called impinge a feather (to make new) Cut the feather below the damage part, never cut were the blood is. Some people cut a strait line some cut at an angle. I cut strait across. |

This is what it should look like after you have cut the bad part of the feather off. Once again do not cut the blood line. Now the tricky bit. it’s not really you feel a bit nervous because you haven’t done it before, relax take a deep breath, and go for it practice on old feathers first before you try it on a live bird. Its not that hard. |

Were it was joined. |
Blood line |

There you go so far so good, You should now have the old feather cut off and this much sticking out of the birds wing as shown in fig 3, notice I have used another feather from a different bird, This is o.k. for practice But do not do it on the bird, try and collect the feathers from the same bird, Put super glue around the bass of the feather you are going to insert. Then push quite hard the new feather into the cut off part still remaining in the wing make sure the feather is in the right position before you glue it this will last until the feather is dropped, |
Below this mark is in side the birds wing it is still alive Blood circulation still working, |
This is sticking out of the wing, This part is dead, |
Super glue |
There you go. Easy wasn't it. Now the bird can fly again with the speed and accuracy it did before the feather was broken. I have done in the past 7 feathers on one bird, it took a while it was fine when finished and flying ok. Practice on old feathers and master it, you will be asked to help out other birds as well. |
18 days after amputation she is Now as fit as any other bird( but only one leg) |
We have had another bird in with lots of in growing feathers this time a sparrow, what’s going on I think I will have to keep an eye open to find out why this is. |
Not all the feathers have blood in them when fully grown, the main flight feathers don’t |
