The Birds |

Since the photo’s were taken of Lewis (the baby in the pram) he has now grown into a teenager. The child with the Tawny owl on the left and the two photo’s with the children below it were taken at a 2007 steam rally in Kent, England. Below those photo’s is Amy holding a Tawny owl, she is a great helper at most of the functions, she drives her own (old) tractor at them all as well as helping the owls.

This young woman and her Father found this male Kestrel in their Garden, they walked up to it placed a coat over it put it in a dark box and bought it to Many Hoots. As you see, it is exhausted, we fed the bird and let it rest for 3 weeks then returned to where it was found. The young woman had never seen a kestrel close up before so I had to take this picture of her. Her dad said it would be ok to use on the web site. Thanks to them another bird is saved, thank you from ManyHoots. |

I was asked by an owl enthusiast in Portugal to Identify what was wrong with one of his European Eagle owls, I told him that I thought it was a mite and that he should go to the vets and get some cream that would kill mites. It seems that Portugal does not have any that would do the job according to a veterinarian in the Algarve , so I sent some ordinary scaly face cream for treating Budgies that have scaly face and leg. I sent him 6 tubes of cream, after just 1 week you could see all mites were dead. I asked him to treat all the sand around the birds that he has with a powder treatment, he did this and the bird is now fine with no trace of mites. The mite is so small that when a bird is infected the mite will scrape its way under the skin and scales of the leg and will breed at an alarming rate, (look out for crustiness around the eyes and the leg scales turning white and lifting) it is common in chickens and budgies, you must disinfect the whole area with an approved disinfectant.
REMEMBER ALL HOT COUNTRIES HAVE MITES IN THE SAND SO KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR YOUR BIRDS OR ANY OTHER DOMESTICATED ANIMAL, MITES WILL CAUSE IRRITATION TO ALL ANIMALS AND BIRDS YOU SHOULD SEEK TREATMENT AS SOON AS YOU SEE ANY SIGN OF IT. |

This kestrel at a first look it just looks tired and hungry, WRONG, at a closer look it was being eaten alive by maggots. Sadly it could not be saved and had to be put to sleep. |

You have seen and heard people talk of the work Many Hoots does rehabilitating wild birds and returning them back to their natural habitat, from garden birds to birds of prey. The birds come to us with injuries from broken bones, broken beaks, starvation, dehydration, exhaustion, small cuts and injuries, loss of feathers preventing them from flying, bloodshot and cloudy eyes, scratched, deflated, to near death, we have had them all.
We get a lot of baby garden birds from one day old. We rear them and train them to cope for themselves in the wild and to find a mate.
IF EVER YOU FIND A BALL OF FLUFF THAT LOOKS LIKE A YOUNG OWL, IT IS ADVISABLE TO LEAVE WELL ALONE IT’S PARENTS ARE NOT FAR AWAY, SOME GO WALK ABOUTS AND RETURN HOME WHEN THEY ARE WORN OUT. REMEMBER LEAVE THEM ALONE, IT’S NATURES WAY TO TEACH THEM TO SURVIVE. |
